Why Most Founders Waste Time Building Features Nobody Wants
As someone who’s spent years in sales and marketing, I can tell you: the biggest conversion killer isn’t bad copy or weak funnels — it’s building something your market never asked for. Here’s how I learned that lesson the hard way.

The Feature Trap
Here’s what happens: You launch an MVP. Users ask for feature X. You build feature X. Then they ask for feature Y. You build feature Y. Suddenly you have a bloated product that does everything poorly instead of one thing exceptionally well.
I fell into this trap hard. My voice AI tool started simple - just voice commands for web browsing. But users wanted email integration. Then document editing. Then project management features. I said yes to everything.
The Reality Check
Six months and 47 features later, I looked at my analytics. The brutal truth: 83% of users only used the original core feature. Everything else was digital clutter.
Worse, each new feature made the core experience more complex. My simple voice browsing tool had become a confusing Swiss Army knife that cut nothing cleanly.
What I Learned
The most successful products don’t do more things. They do fewer things better than anyone else.
When someone asks for a feature, the right question isn’t ‘how can we build this?’ It’s ‘why do you need this?’ Often, the answer reveals a core feature you could improve instead of a new feature you should add.
Now I follow the 90/10 rule: 90% of development time on perfecting core features, 10% on careful expansion. It’s counterintuitive but it works.
The Hard Truth
Saying no to feature requests feels like saying no to revenue. But saying yes to everything is saying no to focus. And focus is what separates profitable products from feature museums.
